History of Rancho Mirage

Featured Story
Golf played a major role in the development of the Rancho Mirage, California community.
Where Rancho Mirage Started

Rancho Mirage, CA history has pretty much been a one-way road toward growth and success. The city, which is settled halfway between the major cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, is a natural place for people to start living. It has great weather, mountain views, and access to many natural beauties. The beauty of the place is, in fact, why people started the community in the first place. The city has always been primarily residential, and it continues to be primarily residential to this day, despite the fact that it is also a favorite tourist destination.

The history of Rancho Mirage starts in the 1940s, when the first country clubs were put into place. Obviously, people lived in the area before this, but the clubs started to draw more traffic and to attract more people who would settle in the area for the winter to play golf throughout the months that would be too cold for the game elsewhere. Residents started to be drawn by the golf courses, and more were added throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

It wasn’t until 1973 that the area was incorporated into a town with its own government system. The main advantage of incorporation was that it allowed the landowners in the area some say in what happened to the land around them. Although Rancho Mirage is still a relatively small city at about twenty-five square miles, many of its attractions extend beyond the borders into the county beyond.

Once the city was incorporated, it began to see even more success, especially as the large resort hotels came to town. Right now, there are three large hotels in the area: Westin Mission Hills, Rancho Las Palmas, and the Ritz-Carlton. These are a large part of the economy of the city, and will continue to be for years to come.
